In the last two years, my family and I sold everything we had, paid down $35,000 in debt, and have traveled and lived in 8 countries together as a family.
We’ve cut our living expenses in HALF all while still being able to travel and see the world!
Currently we are living abroad in Greece, enjoying a 2 bed, 2 bathroom home with a hot tub and a sea view all for the price of $1350 per month with all utilities and housekeeping weekly included! Sounds like a dream right!?
I have to tell you, though, it wasn't always this way..
2 years ago, I was in a completely different position than I am today.
I had always dreamed about living and traveling abroad! Even as a kid I never felt like I truly belonged in the U.S.
I landed my first fully remote job back in 2019 working for a German based company where I flew out to Berlin for 2 weeks to train with the team there. It was the first time I got a taste of what it would be like to live abroad.
That year going into 2020 I was so excited to travel more but shortly after my husband and I took our first trip together to Hawaii in March of 2020, Covid shut down the world and I barely made it by the first round of layoffs.
After travel started to pick up again domestically, we thought we would look into purchasing an RV or a converted Sprinter van but we were denied time over and over again for a loan… so we got creative!
We got approved for a car loan and converted a tiny Ford Transit Connect into a mini camper. But shortly after we finished out the build, I found out I was pregnant and we had to sell our van - which came in handy later but more on that in a bit!
We were so excited to welcome the birth of our daughter Zorah but I quickly realized the reality of being a mother in America after I found out that as a contracted American employee I was not entitled to any paid maternity leave, instead I was only able to access 12 weeks of unpaid leave via FMLA.
I was INFURIATED because during my time in Germany I learned that my German coworkers received up to a year of paid maternity leave! This was unheard of in the States! After begging my job to give me just 10 weeks of paid time off the idea of what life could be like in another country truly started to take shape in my mind.
But it wasn’t until I became a mother that I realized I couldn’t live in the United States anymore.
After an unmedicated and uncomplicated birth, I was hit with a $10,000 hospital bill, my insurance didn’t cover any of my pre-natal check ups or therapy for my postpartum anxiety.
When my husband went back to work after his 2 weeks of paternity leave, we worked opposite schedules from each other to save on childcare costs - at the time was around $1800 per month - which meant we NEVER saw each other.
About 3 months into motherhood, I was overwhelmed, overstimulated, overworked, and worst of all I wasn’t even enjoying the life I had worked SO HARD for because we were just STRUGGLING to keep it all afloat
This was not a NORMAL way to live and so I started to put my plan together for how we were going to leave the U.S.
Within 6 months I quit my job, downsized, created multiple streams of location independent income, landed my dream remote job, and we were living in our first country abroad of Portugal with a company called Boundless Life.
And this was all with starting at an average American salary of around $60K but with a household debt of $72K.
Babe! If I can do this so can you because whew! The odds were against us ...
but we found a way to make it happen and now I’m sharing everything I’ve learned along the way with you so you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.
